For those who have no idea what manga is, check Wikipedia. Summarizing the long article, I’ll say manga is simply Japanese comics. Now as manga became more popular internationally, many manga were translated into other languages, including English. And here began the addiction. Many people now find themselves reading manga and only manga during their free time.
Before a week ago, my biased thoughts succeeded at convincing me that manga was no different from anime, a waste of time. But since I am learning Japanese, I thought I had to take a look at one to see why it has gained all the hype. I searched the internet for some popular manga, and, of course, I found Naruto and other interesting names. I also knew that manga can be read online, although that is illegal (but you know, once would never hurt!). To make a long story short, I started reading Death Note, a well-known manga. To be honest, I have to admit that the plot caught my attention from the very first page. The way the graphics were drawn was magical, and the briefness/simplicity of conversations between characters was captivating. It was totally fun! But then, fearing from instant addiction, I stopped.
I then started to review my thoughts again. I wondered whether manga is really useless to read. Well, I knew that reading it was like reading any other book, except for the fact that it mainly consists of short conversation between characters, and additional graphics to compensate for action/surrounding descriptions. I also realized that manga graphics can stimulate your mind to try to visualize the scenes in motion, and maybe try to figure the voice of each character (it would be much easier with manga, for the mind already know the character’s looks). Plus, I’m sure many manga will reflect the Japanese culture and way of thinking, and that’s so valuable in my opinion, for getting to know their culture is a bit difficult, especially that I’m not fluent in Japanese! What’s more important, many manga will have a good theme to tell at the end, and no one can deny that Japanese people are geniuses when it comes to creativity!
So after all, manga doesn’t seem to waste time at all. But of course, if reading it exceeded the normal limits, that will definitely be fruitless. So be careful! Now let me recommend some manga I knew they were popular after a thorough search:
- Naruto
- Bleach
- One Piece
- Dragon Ball
- Death Note
P.S. Manga is Japanese word, so it doesn’t have a singular or plural form. I used both forms while writing.

Okay, I have to admit it: I’m a lazy person. I haven’t posted in here since about a month. School has been taking much of my time, and I barely had free time to do other minor things. So, I can only hope I’ll be able to ‘successfully’ update the blog twice a week.

I really enjoy reading children’s books (Harry Potter, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc…), and that was the reason why did I decide to read The Spiderwick Chronicles. After a year of procrastination, I finally bought the series from a bookstore in Sydney. I was really interested at the beginning to read them, knowing that the series has been produced into a film in 2008. I spent about one week reading them. Although they were too short, I didn’t have enough time to sit and read.
